the most basic system divides typeface into 2 categories: those with serifs and those without. There are over three thousand typeface readily available to the graphic designer. the subgroups consist of serif, san serif, and something called informal. there are even typeface families that are made up of different subfamilies. Italics based on classical handwriting are generally called cursives and have an almost script-like quality to them, cursive designs are almost excessively confided to serif typestyles.ĭesign. many years passed before the italic typeface was included as part of the type family. Originally, italic letters were created as n independent design based on formalized handwriting. this variation includes both simple oblique letters an a true cursive design. standard proportional increment’s are know as ultra condensed, extra condensed, condensed, normal, expanded extra expanded and ultra expanded.Īngle. bye various stage, typestyles can be condensed or proportionally expanded from the parent design. there i a British standard that classifies stroke weight changes in 8 graduations: extra light, light, semi light, medium, semibold, bold extra bold and ultra bolt. the most common and obvious variation within a type family is weight. although the members of a typeface family may be varied and fivers, all maintain the basic characteristics of the parent design- in much the same way that brothers and sisters look like their parents Type FamilyĪ type family consists of a number of typefaces that show a marked resemblance but have individual design variances, such as weight, proportion, angle, surface texture, and, in some cases, even design. Today, type is electronic data – something cant be held but is wonderfully flexible. Type used to be made out of lead, a very tangible, but relatively inflexible, medium. We have come to expect our type supleers to provide automatic kerning, but until the 1970s, this was a process limited to the most exclusive (and expensive) typographic communication.
